Engineers Week 2023 - Elementary School Day

The 10th Annual Engineers Week 2023 was held on February 19-25, 2023 and consisted of five days of K-12 outreach to celebrate this year’s theme of Creating the Future. Nikki Zulueta, PE of the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering (LABOE) and Andrea Mosqueda Gonzalez, PE of Ardurra served as the Engineers Week Chairs.

Engineers Week 2023 served over 800 students, teachers, professionals, and volunteers who joined together to inspire the next generation of engineers. The week consisted of Elementary School Day led by Andres Perez of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), Middle School Day led by Ani Sarkissian of LADWP, High School Day led by Sam Potts, PE of MNS Engineers, Girl Day led by Christine Rice, PE of Wood Rodgers, and Girl Scouts Day led by Gurjot Kohli, PE of Stantec. LABOE and LADWP were Champion Sponsors for Engineers Week 2023.

The week kicked off with Elementary School Day, on Tuesday, February 21st, led by Andres Perez, with over 140 students participating from three LAUSD schools at the Los Angeles City Hall Forecourt. The students had the privilege of sitting in on a City Council meeting and being recognized by several Council Districts including Councilmember Paul Krekorian, Councilmember Bob Blumenfeld, and Councilmember Monica Rodriguez. The students heard from our opening speaker, Kevin Minne, Division Manager from the Bridge Improvement Division and how there is engineering all around us. The students then participated in hands-on activities such as the gum drop tower where they were able to test their towers using a shake table. They also participated in an egg drop challenge where a volunteer dropped their egg off a six-foot ladder. ASCE LA Younger Member Forum (YMF) awarded three art prizes to elementary school students.
