ASCE
INFORMATION

The structure of our great organization can be a little tricky to understand. Our goal is to help you find the resources you want and understand what role ASCE LA YMF plays in the grand scheme of everything!

ASCE LA YMF is a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch (MLAB). As the parent to ASCE LA YMF, MLAB assists us with events, K-12 outreach, guidance, and funding. Above them, is the Los Angeles Section. The LA Section reports to Region 9, which is the entire state of California. Region 9 consists of Region Governors which help make decisions with Society and help out the sections, branches, younger member forums, and student chapters. ASCE MLAB and ASCE LA YMF oversee 5 student chapters, assisting with funding, training, programming, and other resources.

ASCE SOCIETY

Located in Reston, VA, Society maintains all decisions for the society as a whole and affects each Region (see map on the left), Section, Branch, YMF, and student chapter. The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society.

Society also provides many resources on Civil Engineering news such as the National Infrastructure Report Card. More information can be found on their Newsroom Website here. In addition, you read about issues and advocacy for our profession here.

The ASCE Convention is the Society flagship membership event. It is the single annual opportunity that the entire Society is represented together and therefore needs to reflect the diversity that ASCE encompasses. The program for the Convention will be of an integrated, cross-cultural, technical, and educational nature.

YOUNGER MEMBER RESOURCES

ASCE values the involvement and ideas of early career professionals and sees its younger members as the future of the Society. Younger Members help shape the profession at all levels. As members and leaders of Sections, Branches and Younger Member groups they support one another by providing individual and group resources; opportunities for professional and leadership development; community service and advocacy; and social and professional networking. Younger Member groups and councils make up a vibrant peer-to-peer network that supports early career growth and promotes life-long friendships. If you are a student, we have a section for you too.

105 Younger Member Groups are divided into three Younger Member Councils (Eastern, Central, and Western), which provide volunteer leadership training, allow for the interchange of ideas and methods, share best practices, recognize outstanding individuals, and offer a chance for younger members to be head by the Society's leadership.

The Younger Member Councils are held as part of the Multi-Region Leadership Conferences, in conjunction with the Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders and the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders.  More on the Younger Member Councils can be found here. LA YMF is part of the Western Region Younger Member Council (WRYMC).

COMMITTEE ON YOUNGER MEMBERS

The ASCE Committee on Younger Members (CYM) focuses on the professional development of early career civil engineers to feel empowered and inspired to grow as leaders, engineers, and volunteers by facilitating engagement with, and participation in, the Society. ASCE CYM puts on a variety of programming, including the Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS), YMLS Summit, the three Younger Member Councils, Career Booster Webinar Series, and younger member programming for the ASCE Legislative Fly-in and ASCE Convetion.

The Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS) is a two-day leadership workshop focusing on early-career professional skills development to help ASCE Younger Members succeed and lead in the workplace. The YMLS includes tours and special events during the weekend, offering additional networking opportunities with peers from around the country.
